Can you add a supplement to hot tea – what temperature does to the ingredients

Category:

People ask this question again and again, because morning tea is a convenient moment for everything. One mug, one action, one less habit to remember. But the answer is: it depends on the product, and the instructions on its package decide.

Why temperature matters at all

A higher temperature speeds up chemical reactions and changes the physical properties of a system. This applies to the liquid itself and to the substances in it.

People usually make tea with water close to boiling point, so the difference from the product’s storage conditions can be large. Liquid products are often stored in a cool place.

This does not automatically mean that something is destroyed. It means that the product is in conditions that the producer did not include in its statement.

Three processes that heat starts

Denaturation of protein structures

Proteins and peptides have a specific 3D structure, and their properties depend on it. Heat can change this structure. This is called denaturation.

The simplest example is egg white that sets when you cook it. The process can be permanent, and the changed molecule has different properties from the original one.

One important note: not every component of a product is a protein, so denaturation only applies to this group of compounds.

Breakdown of heat-sensitive compounds

Some substances are described as heat-sensitive, which means they can change or break down at higher temperatures. Nutrition literature names some vitamins, among others, as heat-sensitive.

How fast these changes happen depends on the temperature, the time of exposure, the pH and the presence of other components. So the limits have to be set separately for each substance and each set of conditions. There is no single value for all components.

Changes in taste and smell

The third process is the one you notice most. A higher temperature releases more volatile compounds, so the taste and smell of the product in a hot drink can be stronger.

The mixture itself also changes: components dissolve differently in a hot liquid, and the drink can become cloudy, form sediment or separate into layers.

Why there is no single answer for all cases

There is no one answer that covers all supplements, because they differ in composition, form and production technology.

There are several reasons, and it is worth listing them clearly:

  • Different substances react to temperature differently. Some compounds are stable when heated, others change, and the limit and speed are different for each substance.
  • Different limits. The temperature at which something changes is not the same for all components, and you need to read the data separately for each one.
  • Different formulations. The same component can behave differently in a different mixture or at a different pH.
  • Different contact time. Short contact with heat is a different situation from heating food for 10 minutes or more.
  • The producer’s knowledge. The producer knows the product specification and sets the conditions under which the statement on the label applies.

For this reason, the sentence “hot tea destroys supplements” is just as unclear as “temperature does not harm anything”. An answer only exists for a specific product.

How to read the producer’s recommendation

The instructions for use describe the conditions under which the producer states the product’s composition and quality parameters. Information about temperature is part of this statement.

Recommendations differ: you can add some products to any drink, others only to cold drinks, and for others the producer recommends taking them directly. For example, you take THESYBIN food supplement once a day, in the morning, before breakfast: 6.5 ml with at least twice the amount of water (13 ml), warm or cold.

There is one rule: the instructions on the specific package decide. General advice, including the advice in this article, does not replace what the producer says.

If the label says nothing about this, it is worth asking the producer. The contact details of the responsible company must appear on the label.

What to do if you like to mix a supplement with a drink

Cold and lukewarm drinks

If the instructions allow you to mix the product with cold drinks, there are many options: water, juice, a plant-based drink, drinking yoghurt or a smoothie.

Tea can also work, as long as it has had time to cool. Tea made earlier and left to cool counts as a lukewarm drink.

Use the portion at once. After measuring, rinse the container with a little of the drink, because some of the product stays on the sides.

How to check the temperature without a thermometer

The tips below are approximate and depend on the amount of drink, the container and the room temperature. The producer’s recommendation decides.

DrinkHow to recognise itPractical note
HotSteam above the surface, the mug is too hot to hold in your hand for longNot suitable if the producer advises against hot liquids
WarmThe mug is clearly warm, but you can hold it in your handStill warmer than a lukewarm drink
LukewarmThe mug is cool or slightly warm, you can drink it without waitingUsually counts as a cold or lukewarm drink
ChilledA drink from the fridge, the container feels coldNo doubts about temperature

A simple way is to leave the tea to stand for 10 minutes or more and then check the temperature of the mug with your hand.

Another option is to do the two things at different times: first the product, as the instructions say, then the tea.

Summary

Temperature matters, because it speeds up chemical changes, can change the structure of proteins and affects how things dissolve and taste. But it does not affect all substances in the same way.

The answer to the question in the title depends on the specific product and its composition. The only binding source is the instructions on the package or, if there are none, information from the producer.

In practice, the simplest way is to mix the product with a cold or lukewarm drink or to take it separately. Then temperature is no longer a problem.

FAQ

Is lukewarm tea a safe option?

If the producer allows cold and lukewarm drinks, tea that has cooled until you can easily hold the mug in your hand usually counts as one of them. But the wording on the label decides.

Is short contact with a hot liquid less important than long heating?

The time of exposure is one of the factors that affect chemical changes, so short contact is a different situation from cooking for 10 minutes or more. This does not change the producer’s recommendation if it rules out hot liquids.

What should I do if the product has already been added to a hot drink?

This is not a reason to worry about safety, but the portion may have been prepared in conditions that the producer did not plan for. Prepare the next portion as the instructions say, and if in doubt, contact the producer.
